Our 2024 Candidate for Vashon’s Unofficial Mayor: 100 year old Marj Watkins
Vashon Senior Center is a community gathering place for older adults and the people who care about them.
With a median age of 53 years young, Vashon-Maury Island has the highest percentage population of older adults in King County. Current projected growth of King County’s older adult population shows that by 2040, 30% of the County’s population will be at least 55 years old. At Vashon Senior Center, we truly serve the needs and represent the demographics of our local community.
What we do
At the Center, seniors enjoy Dining with Friends, receive lunches delivered to their homes, ride the Care-A-Van, access support through the Senior Center Village, and enjoy over 20 programs each week including foot care, smartphone and tech support and more.
How We do What We Do
The Senior Center has a small, nimble staff and an extraordinary volunteer corps. Over 140 volunteers, most of them seniors themselves, are dedicated to helping those who need support. On a weekly basis, our volunteers:
Make salads for 180+ lunches
Pack and deliver those salads and 100+ hot lunches to homebound seniors every Monday, Wednesday and Friday
Drive seniors to medical and other appointments and provide chore support
Maintain our beautiful gardens
Run all our member-led programs: weekly Zumba, Tai Chi, Spinal Mobility, and a Wild Walk on Vashon trails every month. They lead Mah Jongg, Bridge, Scrabble, Canasta, Pinochle and more, Music Mends Minds and groups that exercise crucial mental agility and combat memory loss and dementia. Our Book Club, Photo Club, knitting groups, writing groups, and more provide social connections.
At Vashon Senior Center, friends both old and new come together for companionship, nutrition, and community. While our focus population is adults ages 55 and older, everyone is welcome at the Center - and no one is ever turned away for inability to pay.
